PAPU CARES - CARE INSTRUCTIONS FOR YOUR PAPU PRODUCTS

Did you know that how a garment is cared for and used has a huge impact on extending its life cycle and on its overall environmental impact? Research has shown that the use phase is one of the most environmentally burdensome stages in a garment's entire life cycle. That's why we want to share information on how you can help preserve the quality of a product and enjoy the product you bought or received as a gift for as long as possible!
Papu products are designed to last. They are designed and made with care and respect for the environment. We do our best to guarantee the quality and longevity of our products. After purchase, responsibility for caring for the product passes to our customer, but we want to do our best to be part of our products' lives all the way from design to wear.

CARE INSTRUCTIONS BY MATERIAL
You'll find product-specific washing instructions for every Papu product. We recommend checking the instructions on the care label and following them when caring for your garment – this ensures the product is cared for properly and, at best, even spares it from unnecessarily harsh treatment.
CARING FOR COTTON
- Always check the recommended care instructions on the product's care label and follow them!
- Normal wash at 40 degrees.
- May shrink by 5%
- 100% cotton can also withstand washing at 60 or even 95 degrees. Most Papu cotton products also contain 5% elastane, in which case they should be washed at 40 degrees (see the separate instructions for caring for cotton-elastane). To save energy, use 40 degrees for everyday washing of only slightly soiled clothes, such as adults' clothes. Dirtier clothes may sometimes need a 60-degree wash. Although a low washing temperature uses less energy, dirt also wears down the fibres of the textile.
- Avoid ironing altogether if possible. Tip: always shape the product while it's damp. One way to avoid ironing is to hang the dry (but wrinkled) product in the bathroom, where the steam from the shower smooths the surface – no energy needed for ironing!
- Please don't tumble dry Papu products, as tumble dryers use an excessive amount of energy. Dry Papu products outdoors whenever possible, or let them air-dry. When drying outdoors in summer, remember that sunlight can fade the product's colours and weaken the fibres.
- Please note the separate instructions for caring for 100% cotton knitwear!
CARING FOR COTTON KNITWEAR
- Normal wash at 30–40 degrees.
- Always check the recommended care instructions on the product's care label and follow them!
- Don't use a high spin speed. On most washing machines you can adjust the spin speed – during spinning, the drum rotates at around 100–1800 revolutions per minute.
- Put the product in a laundry bag if it fits.
- Make sure there are no clothes in the washing machine that could catch on the knit and damage it (e.g. clothes with zips or Velcro).
- Cotton absorbs a great deal of moisture, so a cotton knit can be very heavy after washing. Knitwear in general should be dried flat: dry knitwear horizontally on a drying rack, the bathroom floor or sauna benches. You can place a towel underneath to absorb the moisture from the knit. Remember to choose a towel that suits the colour of the product being dried: some textiles can release colour onto other textiles when damp. When the product is almost dry, you can remove the damp towel from underneath. Eco tip: use clean towels that are going into use as hand towels, or used face towels that aren't actually dirty.
- Avoid ironing altogether if possible, and always iron on the reverse side only. Tip: always shape the product while it's damp. One way to avoid ironing is to hang the dry (but wrinkled) product in the bathroom, where the steam from the shower smooths the surface – no energy needed for ironing! However, don't leave a cotton knit hanging on a hanger for long, so that the knit doesn't stretch.
- Please don't tumble dry Papu products, as tumble dryers use an excessive amount of energy. Dry Papu products outdoors whenever possible, or let them air-dry. When drying outdoors in summer, remember that sunlight can fade the product's colours and weaken the fibres.
- It's best to store knitwear folded, as hangers or coat hooks can stretch the knit.
CARING FOR COTTON-ELASTANE
- Always check the recommended care instructions on the product's care label and follow them!
- Normal wash at 40 degrees.
- May shrink by 5%
- Don't use fabric softeners – fabric softeners weaken elastane and can cause its fibres to break. This makes the knit of the garment loosen, so washing without fabric softener has a significant effect on the garment's longevity and on preserving its quality.
- Avoid ironing altogether if possible. The heat of the iron can damage elastane fibres. If necessary, iron only at a low temperature on the reverse side of the garment.
CARING FOR LINEN
- Always check the recommended care instructions on the product's care label and follow them!
- Linen can withstand temperatures of up to 60 degrees, but it also gets clean well in cooler 40-degree water.
- May shrink by 5%
- Wrinkling is part of linen's character. You can avoid ironing or reduce the need for it by shaping the linen product while it's damp. You can hang a wet linen product on a hanger to dry and straighten the seams, sleeves and hems as much as possible. One way to avoid ironing is to hang the dry (but wrinkled) linen product in the bathroom, where the steam from the shower smooths the surface – no energy needed for ironing!
- Please don't tumble dry Papu products, as tumble dryers use an excessive amount of energy. Dry Papu products outdoors whenever possible, or let them air-dry. When drying outdoors in summer, remember that sunlight can fade the product's colours and weaken the fibres.
CARING FOR LYOCELL
- Unlike the product's washing instructions, we recommend a gentle 30-degree wash for these products.
- May shrink by 5%
- Wash the product inside out in a laundry bag.
- Use a detergent without bleach.
- Please note that bright and colourful products may release loose dye even when dry, so please wash the product before use.
- Lyocell is sensitive to stain removers and to rubbing stains, so please avoid strong products and rubbing. If a stain appears, wash the whole product instead of just the stained area.
- Lyocell can be a little stiff after washing, but it softens again once dry. Ironing the product on the reverse side while slightly damp straightens and softens the material and helps reverse any shrinkage.
- Don't soak the product or leave it wet in the machine – take it out to dry immediately.
- Please don't tumble dry Papu products, as tumble dryers use an excessive amount of energy. Dry Papu products outdoors whenever possible, or let them air-dry. When drying outdoors in summer, remember that sunlight can fade the product's colours and weaken the fibres.
CARING FOR ECOVERO VISCOSE
- Always check the recommended care instructions on the product's care label and follow them!
- Normal wash at 40 degrees.
- May shrink by 5%
- Use a detergent without bleach.
- Please note that bright and colourful products may release loose dye even when dry, so please wash the product before use.
- EcoVero is sensitive to stain removers and to rubbing stains, so please avoid strong products and rubbing. If a stain appears, wash the whole product instead of just the stained area.
CARING FOR MERINO WOOL
- Wool is a self-cleaning material. A worn wool garment without stains is best cleaned by airing it – or with a good old snow wash! Wool products should only be washed when they are really dirty. Spot-clean individual stains.
- When washing is needed, remember that hand washing is recommended for most of our merino wool products. Don't wash wool products in hot water. Lukewarm or even cooler water is perfectly fine for washing merino wool.
- Use gentle detergents designed for wool and silk.
- Dry merino wool products flat on a drying rack, the bathroom floor or sauna benches. You can place a towel underneath to absorb the moisture from the wool.
Eco tip: shape the wool product while it's damp – this way you can avoid ironing altogether!
- Please don't tumble dry Papu products, as tumble dryers use an excessive amount of energy. Dry Papu products outdoors whenever possible, or let them air-dry. When drying outdoors in summer, remember that sunlight can fade the product's colours and weaken the fibres.
- It's best to store wool products folded, as hangers or coat hooks can stretch the knit.
CARING FOR BERETS
100% wool (felted)
- Do not wash with water.
- Do not iron.
- Do not tumble dry.
- Antibacterial wool is a self-cleaning material, so airing is usually enough. Wool products are best cleaned outdoors in fresh air. Spot-clean individual stains: a dry stain often comes off by lightly scraping it. If necessary, gently wipe the stain with a damp, clean cloth.
Here are a few more useful tips to help you extend the life of your clothes and keep them in good condition:
- We recommend washing new Papu clothes before first use: colour may come off the garment during the first few wears, so washing before first use is recommended.
- Always follow the washing instructions: following the right way to wash and care for a garment helps preserve its quality and colour for longer.
- Avoid washing too often: air the garment after wearing if it isn't dirty. Washing wears the fabric, so avoid unnecessary washing whenever possible.
- Treat stains straight away: remove stains as soon as possible so they don't have time to soak into the fabric and set.
- Store the garment correctly: hang clothes loosely or fold them carefully so they keep their shape.
- Care for your garment with love: repair small damage, such as sewing on a button or mending a seam, to extend the garment's life.
- Pass the garment on after use: when you no longer need the garment, give it a new life and pass it on.
